Dogs

Dogs.

They beg for your attention
Pleading for your distracted eyes to fall on them
Their wide, innocent eyes meeting yours
Then training themselves on your hand
All they want
Is someone to scratch them behind the ear
To say “good job!”
“You did it!”
People are a lot like that too
All we want is approval
from friends,
family,
classmates
Acceptance and approval are vital to us
You get a letter of acceptance to attend a college
You decide whether or not to accept someone into your group of friends
you need approval from your parents to go somewhere
Acceptance and approval are the backbone of our society
fitting into our lives like a giant puzzle
and making sure we
look, act, sound
as acceptable as possible
because really,
all we want
is to fit in

  1. The title made me expect a cute fun poem, but you really made a powerful statement with your analogy. I especially liked the imbedded dialogue, it made the transition between the ideas very smooth. Great job!

  2. Very nice analogy with the approval dogs like as well as the approval people like, great poem!
