I’ve been asked by little girls if I’m a princess
and I guess I am
not because of my blonde hair
my blue eyes
or my slim figure
not because I try to look my best everyday
I’m a princess because I’m important
I’m a princess because I try my best each and everyday
I’m a princess because one day I’ll rule
I’m a princess because I’m not yet a queen
I’m not just a princess
I’m a warrior
I’ve fought my battles
My battles have been against my biggest enemy and harshest critic
myself
My battles have been against the constant dark cloud that envelops my mind
that makes it hard to see anything beautiful
Each day my battle against that dark cloud continues
but more and more I’m seeing the sun
the warmth of the sun touching my skin and making me glow even if briefly
My battles have been against mosquitoes coming up to my ears and buzzing
“you’re not pretty enough”
“not skinny enough”
The mosquitoes have landed many times sucking away at my blood
Leaving me with bumps that ache
and I can still feel no matter how much I ignore
My battles are difficult and on going, but still I fight
because I am a warrior and a princess
I am tough yet regal
I am strong yet beautiful
I am me
I really enjoyed the way you framed your poem and how you're strong because you have fought your battles and not because of the way you look. I liked your imagery and your message. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the format of your poem Jaimie. I also really like the message that you are sending. I think its important for women to realize that they are strong and warriors. GOOD JOB!!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting way to look at a princess. It makes them seem more than just "damsels in distress," waiting for a prince to save them, and that they are their own person and try to be themselves, while at the same time being a princess.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how your poem shows that you are a prince not because your pretty, or pay attention to your clothing, but because your strong and a warrior, and that real princesses fight their own battles.
ReplyDeleteThis was really creative and cool to think about a princess. Beautiful job in creating this poem!
