Fastbreak
Our towering starting center,
boxes out the defender for the jump
hanging in mid-air
gathering the orange leather
like a treasured possession.
whirling around ready to throw the pass
to the outlet screaming down the court
an underhand dart to the other guard,
weaving past a clumsy defender
as if glued to the floor in the wrong direction.
forwards racing down the court,
the way forwards should, fanning out
running like brothers passing the ball
without a dribble between them
not a single bounce against the hardwood
the impending power-forward explodes past them
a toss to the bulldozing player
adrenaline coursing through his veins
defenders behind him standing in awe
gliding with the ball through the air
by himself now at the hoop
laying the ball gently
against the glass for a lay-up
spinning around to spot an orange blur,
perfectly flowing through the net.
