You Don't Know What It's Like

You Don’t Know What It’s Like

You don’t know what it’s like
To not be able to resist a second helping
To say no
To limit yourself

Because

You don’t know what it’s like to look at the reflection in the mirror
And see a girl with chubby cheeks, a pudgy belly, and wide hips
While everyone else sees a girl with skin stretched so tight over her weak frame her bones are jutting out

You don’t know what it’s like
To be so low that you can’t even see that you’re killing yourself

Your body
Growling
Howling
Begging for a morsel of food

You try to justify it
And the worst part of all
You believe your lies
You believe being paper thin will solve all of your problems
You believe this emaciated body is what is best for you

Now no matter how hard you try
You can’t resist that second helping
You can’t say no
You can’t limit yourself

Because

Now that you have chubby cheeks, a pudgy belly, and wide hips
When you look in the mirror
All you see is that girl who thought she was unlovable and unwanted
That girl with her skin stretched thin to cover her weak frame

  1. This is a strong poem and I enjoyed reading it, the darkness of it fits in and shows you the reality of the situation.

  2. This is a really powerful poem because it shows the reality almost every single girl has thought of. You showed the horrible truth, while everyone believed in the beautiful lie.
