Act 1, Scene 1: Broken Romeo

Prompt B

Benvolio - Why attempt to broker peace instead of fighting?

Tybalt - Why do you intend to fight when Benvolio is trying to broker peace?

Lord Capulet - Why do you intend to fight the Montagues when you can barely walk without a crutch?

Prince Escalus - Why do you think that the death penalty is a fitting punishment for if the Montagues and Capulets keep fighting?

Romeo - Why are you so grief-stricken about Rosaline? Do you not think you will find another woman to love?

  1. Answers:
Benvolio - Even though the two families are enemies, he doesn't want them to start fighting in the streets, probably because he knew that it would upset the Prince or the other citizens of the town.
Prince Escalus - It's like he said, they've disturbed the streets of Verona many times before. I'm sure that he knows that their fighting is ridiculous, but knows he cannot convince them to stop, even if he is the prince. What he can do was keep them from fighting, so that, like what happened later in the story, nobody gets hurt or killed.

  2. Tybalt wants to fight Benvolio because he is aggressive and hates Montagues.
Benvolio is probably just a peaceful person, and plus fighting would endanger his life.
