Act 1 Scene 1: Taunts and Throws

Sampson and Gregory seem to be itching for a fight in this case, as shown by Sampson saying, "I will bite my thumb at them, which is disgrace to them if they bear it." Then, when Abram asks if he is biting his thumb at them, Sampson says he is not. He is clearly taunting Abram and waiting for him to get mad enough to fight. This reminds me of fights in hockey. Just like how the two families, the Montague and the Capulets, hate each other, the two teams in hockey see their opponents as enemies and are often filled with rage. This leads them to tease and trash talk each other, which often leads the two sides fighting. Hatred of another group often starts with only talking and taunting, but proves to become physical fast and suddenly.

  1. Why do the two families always it to fight with each other?purely out of hatred? In hockey do the people tend to fight with each other to build up self-confidence, and get their team going. Sometimes people's hatred can really blind them.

  2. This is a good example of how a situation like this happens in real life. The hockey fight generally starts over a small issue, but eventually escalates into a full blown fight, such as the Montagues and Capulets fighting over biting the thumb.
