1: If the Capulets are hosting a party why would they not check everyone that is coming? Lord Capulet obviously wants to have a good time and he said that everyone that is not a Montague is invited. Even when the Montages do arrive he does not want to spoil the party over them and the only anger he shows is towards Tybalt and not Romeo or any of the Others. Even after the party Lord Capulet seems to not bring it up again and neither does Tybalt.
2:In the scene at night where Mecurtio is ranting on and on he seems to have no specific endpoint. Was it normal for the characters within these stories just to speak with poetry and have some major voice line? They do want to have some comic relief and it does seem to make sense where it is but at some point it would not be the most pleasing to see one person within a play going on and on.
3:Why does Romeo fall head over heels when he sees Juliet? We already know that he loves Rosaline but why does he all of a sudden just love Juliet to the greatest extent after seeing her. At Romeos age he should know better. Even though she might be beautiful he should not just give up on someone else because he thinks he has found someone "better."
4:When Romeo is so up front with Juliet why is Juliet ok with this? She is a fair Maiden of the Capulet family and at least could know a little edict. When Romeo approaches her it would be creepy for him just to start talking to her even if they did notice each other before. Just randomly talking about kissing each other at first sight is not the most normal thing.
5: How does Mercurio know Romeo so well? He is one of his best friends but every time Romeo is in love he can tell and he should probably tell him something. If you had a friend that would fall in love day after day with someone more beautiful wouldn't you want them just to settle eventually and not give up on the last?
I thought that your post was very detailed and thoughtful. However, I think that you are supposed to address the questions to a character in the scene.
ReplyDeleteFor your second question, I think that Shakespeare has a style of making some characters talk on and on (like the nurse). I think he does that to let the audience be more amused. To answer your first question, I think that he just wants as many people to come and celebrate at his party and since he is celebrating something, he doesn't want to ruin his party.
ReplyDeleteMy answers (Note: These are not correct, but I am giving my opinion on what I think the answers to your questions are):
ReplyDelete1. Well, I don't think that they would expect a Montague to show up, mainly because it's a Capulet party, and it is their enemy or rival. However, they did show up, but notice how Lord Capulet did not make a scene, because if he did, he would face the death penalty which was declared by the Prince earlier on in the book, in another scene.
2. Within that scene, I think he threw in some humorous jokes that, maybe, the people who were there, witnessing the play, understood, and so they were most likely entertained.
3. I had this question too, but I think he falls in love with Juliet mainly because Rosaline didn't love him back and he needed to find love again.
4. I think it's because Juliet also found Romeo attracting, because during that scene, I believe that he had his mask off.
5. I don't understand this question all that well, but I believe Romeo knows Mercucio so well because they are part of the same kingdom, I guess, or clan. I don't really know, but you would expect that over the years they would gain some friendship and become closer friends.
